How to Stop Being Disappointed

“Blessed is he who expects nothing, for he shall never be disappointed.” – Alexander Pope
I often hear people say, “I’ll be happy when _______.” What comes after the “when” can vary:
when I lose weight
when I get a new job
when I find someone special
when I make more money
and on
and on
and on
Then you get a new job and you find other things that will make you happy instead.
I’ve learned that truly happy people are happy in the current moment regardless of what is happening. They have hope, but their joy is not dependent on the outcome. The definition of disappointment is failed expectations. If you eliminate the expectations, you will automatically eliminate the disappointment.
Happiness is found right here, right now. You can find happiness in your crappy job, your angry teenagers and your jeans that are 4 sizes bigger than they used to be.
Happiness is a choice. Society doesn’t MAKE you angry, you LET it anger you.
Have hope and dreams, but make the decision that you will be happy while you are waiting for those dreams to come true.
Choose joy over misery and contentment over disappointment. Life is just SO much better that way!
